Atlases ... see Maps on this page .

Audiobooks ... the Libraries hold a range of books on audio-cassette or CD available for loan. They include popular & classic novels, poetry, plays & a few non-fiction works such as travel. These are free to borrow.

 

B

Bestsellers (Hot Picks) ... the Libraries buy extra copies of some bestselling titles (mostly novels) and make these available on a priority basis for a charge of $4. Free copies of such titles are also available but there may be a waiting list to borrow them.

Biographies ... the Libraries have an extensive collection of biographies of NZ and international figures. These are shelved in the Non-Fiction 920s area.

CafeNET... see WiFi on this page

Car Manuals ... reference Car Manuals are held in Central Library, Ground Floor. These focus on older models of cars (more necessary!) and include SUV, light van, motorcycle, lawnmower & marine motor manuals.

CDs ... we have a wide range of music CDs. Most of these cost $2 for 2 weeks issue, with some CDs free for 2 weeks.

Checking your card online ... to see what you have out on loan. You can renew items and check the status of your reserves. Enter your library card number, which starts with L0 (zero), and a pin (password).

Computer Games ... we hold a selection of PC, Playstation & other console games that can be borrowed for $10 or $5 per loan.

Consumer Information... this is found in our Consumer & Law section on our eResources. All Libraries hold borrowing copies of current Consumer magazines. The Central Library also has a Reference set.

Council Documents ... all Libraries hold copies of key Hutt City Council publications such as District Plans and documents under current public consultation. These can also be viewed on the HCC Have Your Say page.

Databases ... go to the eResources page.

Deaf ... free access to subtitled DVDs (up to 3 per issue) for members of the Deaf Association(NZ). Please bring your DANZ ID card.

Disabled access ... all Libraries have facilities for access by wheelchair. The Central Library complies with the NZ Building Code requirements for access and facilities.

Displays ... community groups wishing to mount displays can book the use of facilities in a community library by contacting the library.  All points of view (within the law) will be accepted but the Libraries do not necessarily endorse these. Staff reserve the right to remove notices or displays which fall outside the scope of policy.

DVDs ... we have a great selection of DVDs - new releases and other movies, TV series, and documentaries. These are $3 or $5 for one week, boxed sets are $3 or $5 for 2 weeks and a small collection of DVDs are free for hire.

Electoral Rolls ... the Central Library holds sets of all current NZ Rolls and older Rolls back to the 1850s on microfiche. Community Libraries hold current local Rolls

Encyclopedias ... all Libraries hold sets of general encyclopaedias for reference. We also provide online access to Encyclopaedia Britannica through our eResources service.

Exam Papers ... the Research Centre, Central Library holds reference sets of NCEA exam papers.

Games ... the Libraries hold a range of PS2, XBOX and CD-ROM games available for loan. Charges for borrowing range from $10 or $5 for PS2 & XBOX games and $5 or $3 for CD-ROM games. Charges are stated on the cases.

Genealogy resources ... check our resources for family historians at the Research Centre.

Graphic Novels ... the Central Library has large & diverse Adult & Teen collections. You can search for them in the Catalogue by adding ‘graphic novel’ to your keyword.

Health Information ... a wide range of health material is provided covering mainstream & alternative medicine. All Libraries hold reference copies of medical & drug handbooks. In depth health resources are also available through our Health & Wellness Resource Center.

Holds (Reserves) ... you can place a hold (reserve) on any item - just drop into your nearest Library, phone the Library, or use the online Catalogue (you need your library card number, which starts with L0 (zero), and a pin). All reserves are free.

Homework Help ... all Libraries will assist with homework assignments. Research Centre, Central Library can provide individual or group sessions on research skills. The Teens and Kids pages provide links to useful online resources.

Hours of Opening ...all Libraries open at 10.00 am. Check the Hours & Locations for the library you want.

Housebound ... if you, or a relative or friend, are physically unable to come to a library to select items then you can enrol in our Housebound Service. Staff will choose material for you (books, CDs/audiobooks) and arrange for it to be delivered free of charge. Phone 570 2724 for further info. You can also of course search our online Catalogue to see what we do hold & request a title.

Information Services ... check out our resources and services.

Interloans ... If you need to interloan an item, you can request it online via Contact Us, fill in a form at your local library, or phone (04) 570 2709 for our Interloans Librarian. There is a minimum charge of $10 per item.

Internet ... explore our resources for internet PCs or any one of our the Research Team if you need help using the internet.

Items not held ...if you need an item not in our collections then we can check whether it is held by another NZ library and if so, interloan it for you. There is a minimum charge of $10.00 to cover costs involved. You can request it online via Contact Us or phone (04)570 2709. Alternatively you could suggest we purchase it but the title must meet our collection policy guidelines & may take some time to acquire.

Large Print ... all Libraries hold a section of books in large print format for those with sight difficulties. These include novels in most genres (mystery, romance, etc) & a few non-fiction titles.

Language resources ...we hold collections of material (print and sound) for learning languages from Arabic to Swedish including Te Reo Māori. There are also collections of basic readers (‘Quick Reads’) for adults learning English some of which include audiotapes.

Legislation/legal information ... the Research Centre, Central library holds all NZ Statutes & Regulations and an extensive collection of reference legal guides. Information Services staff can assist you to access current legislation. Online resources are found on the eResources page.

Magazines ... all Libraries hold copies of recent popular magazines in a range of interests, the Central Library collection being very diverse. Search for them in the Catalogue by adding ‘magazine’ to your keywords. The Research Centre, Central Library retains reference copies of key NZ magazines. Many thousands of overseas magazines are accessible through our Databases.

Maps ... all Libraries hold reference atlases & NZ road/street maps. The Central Library holds NZ topographic, national park, Pacific Islands & local historical maps.

Membership ... for Hutt City residents joining the Libraries is free.

Movies ... are available at your local library. These are $3 or $5 for one week. Check out our list of Academy Awards Best Film Winners on DVD.

Music ... the Libraries hold a selection of music on CD & some videos/DVDs. The Central library has a small collection of music scores searchable through the Catalogue by adding ‘music’ to your keywords.

Naenae Community Library ... check the location and details of Naenae Library.

Newspapers ... all Libraries hold current copies of  the Dominion Post and the Hutt News & other community papers. The Central Library keeps the Dominion Post for 2 years, the Hutt News permanently,& nearly complete historical runs of the Evening/Dom Post on microfilm. They also receive the dailies from other metropolitan cities, a few provincial papers & a small selection of overseas papers. Many NZ & international newspapers can be accessed though our Databases or newspaper links on the eResources page.

Non-Fiction ... 'Read & Relax' with the latest Non-Fiction titles.

Pacific Islands resources ... books on the Pacific Islands are identified by a Hibiscus spine label. The Libraries hold various Pasifika magazines & newspapers and current online newspapers can be accessed free through our Free Internet service.

Password (Pin)... to access your borrowing record or use the Libraries' databases from home you need to obtain a PIN. Ask at any Library to be set up with one & make full use of our online services.
Forgot your PIN?... we cannot access your PIN but send us an email to tell us what you'd like your new PIN to be and we'll activate it.

Patron records ... check your card to see what you have out on loan. You can renew items and check the status of your reserves. Enter your library card number, which starts with L0 (zero), and a pin (password).

PCs ... available free of charge for word processing at the Research Centre and all Community Libraries.

Petone Community Library ... check the location and details of Petone Library.

Phone Books ... all Libraries hold collections of NZ phone books. International numbers can be accessed from online directories by Libraries staff.

Photocopying ... all Libraries provide self help photocopying facilities at a charge of 20c/page. The Central Library has a colour photocopier on the Ground Floor (at $1/A4 page).

Photos (historic) ... a collection of local historic photos is housed in the Research Centre, Central Library.

PIN (Password) ... to access your borrowing record or use the Libraries' databases from home you need to obtain a PIN. Ask at any Library to be set up with one & make full use of our online services.

Reference services ... all Libraries provide Quick Reference Services or come to Central Library Ground Floor, Ask a Librarian or use the selected websites on Quick Reference

Renew your books by using the red catalogue link on the right hand side of the screenRenewals ... loans may be extended (renewed) twice. No renewals if the item has been requested by someone else. You may do it at any Library, including on Self Issue machines(if you have the book with you), online through the Catalogue (you need your library card number, which starts with L0 (zero), and a pin), or by phoning 570 2708 or 570 2712.

Requests for Purchase ... If we don't hold an item you want in our collection, you can suggest we purchase it either online via Contact Us or by filling in a form at your local library. The title must meet our collection policy guidelines & may take some time to acquire.

Reserves (Holds) ... you can reserve (place a hold) on any item - just drop into your nearest Library, phone the Library, or use the online Catalogue (you need your library card number, which starts with L0 (zero), and a pin). All reserves are free.

Returning items ... all libraries have an after hours return slot (closed when the Library is open).

Self Issue ... machines that enable customers to issue or renew their own items are currently available in the Central Library. We are gradually expanding these facilities to other Libraries.

Study Guides ... larger Community Libraries hold core study guides for secondary curriculum subjects. The Central Library Learning Centre and Teens area hold extensive reference collections for use in the Library.

Wainuiomata Community Library ... check the location and details of Wainuiomata Library.

Whakapapa ... the Māori  Reference Collection/ Pūranga Kōrero Māori, Central Library holds many iwi history & other taonga that include whakapapa charts and information on tūpuna. A short guide to these resoruces is available in the reference area.

WiFi...the Central Library has WiFi capability throughout the building - if you have a WiFi enabled laptop you can register with CafeNET service and use broadband Internet within the building from this network.

Word Processing ... all Libraries have at least 1 PC that provides free access to MS Word. Printing is charged for at 20c/page.
